The Standard of Perfection review committee is under way! We started at the top of the Standard and have discussed the Introduction, Economic Qualities, Standard Weights, Disqualifications and started on "Shape". We adjusted the introduction paragraph to align with the majority of standards. The two major changes so far is to skin color and weights. We changed the color of the skin to state "white" instead of yellow. This will favor breeding for true slate legs and a "bluer" bird. We recognize that yellow is the predominant skin color now, but both likely existed in the original birds. It will take some time to transition our flocks, but in compliance with APA expectations we have to make a choice for the SOP. We also know we need to increase the size of the birds, so we increased the weights in the standard to 8 lb cock, 7 lb hen and cockerel, and 6 lb pullet. Again, it will take some time to get there, but the SOP should describe the perfect bird.
